Tracking Mira's Children: Liba/Elizabeth

This is the fourth in a series tracking the children of Mira Halperin Lefand Marienhoff. You can see everything in this series to this point here.

Liba Marienhoff was born around 1890 or 1892 in Nezhin, Ukraine.  Her birth was not recorded in the Jewish metrical records--which seemed to be not unusual for girls, as there were almost double the number of boys as girls recorded in the town's birth records of the 1890s.

The first mention of her is when she came to America with her mother, sister, brother and half-nephew in 1906:
Liba Marienhoff Ship Manifest, 1906 (line 3)

I'd mentioned earlier about how Liba's mother Mira/Mary would switch between the family names from her two marriages.  Here, Liba was listed as being 16 (so born around 1890), from Niezin.

Four years later in the 1910 census in Pittsburgh, Liba was Elizabeth and was living with her mother Mary, sister Emma (the Nechama from the ship manifest), brother Harry (Herschel), and brother David (who came over separately).  They also had her half brother-in-law Hillel Tolchinsky and his son Isadore (the Itze from the ship manifest) listed as boarders.  Elizabeth was 18 (implying that she was born around 1892), and her profession was something that looks like "Toby Maker" in a factory.  She was able to read and write.
1910 Census, Pittsburgh, PA.  Elizabeth is on line 77.

And Elizabeth disappears after that.  I assume she got married at some point before the 1920 census and changed her last name, and I have been unable to locate any marriage record.  She's the only one of Mira's children who I haven't managed to track.

  1. Any obituaries for Elizabeth's siblings that might mention a married name of their surviving sister? Forgive me if you have already tried this strategy.

    1. I did try that strategy, but it's a good one--thanks! Many of the siblings didn't seem to have an obit, and those that did only mentioned children and grandchildren--no siblings. :(
