Chernigov Guberniya Jewish Community Records, 1839-1842

(ADDITION:  Please do not contact me asking me to search for your specific ancestral surname.  A link to the records are below, so you can search for as many names as you want.  And yes, I had to add this because of the number of personal requests I've received--there are over 1000 pages here!)

Two days before the Russians invaded Ukraine, I had sent money to Chernihiv Archives to get records that I thought would contain metrical (vital) records for the Nizhyn/Nezhin Jewish community.  Once the invasion happened, I (understandably!) didn't receive the records.  So I was very surprised to get a recent email letting me know that my records were ready to be downloaded.  And I was also surprised to see what was actually in this (huge) file.

A page of family lists

I received over 1000 pages of what seems to be several different record sets applying to the Jews of Chernigov Guberniya from 1839-1842.  There are pages with family lists (essentially a census of those included).  There are pages of legal records with people's original signatures which may largely be people asking for permission to live in a particular place.  And there's more.

Do you read Russian more fluently than I do?  Can you skim through these records to help me (and others) understand what the various sections are in this huge file?  Please comment below if you can help characterize the page number where various sections start.  (And if you see any Lefands mentioned, plaese call those out too. :) )  And then hopefully we can start indexing those sections that are of the most interest.

Lots of signatures....
How do you see these images?  Alex Krakovsky will be added them to his page shortly (update: they are now here).  But meanwhile, you can browse through them here.  And follow up with the comments on this page where hopefully people will help to characterize what's in this huge collection of documents.

  3. Wow, Lara, that is an incredible treasure trove. Hopefully more finds like this show up for Chernihiv to cover the years that are missing for so many areas.

    1. If people order records like I did, that's one way.... I hope they are digitizing like crazy regardless!

    3. Bella, that's awesome! If you can characterize the various sections (and maybe even extract surnames), that would be wonderful. Thank you!

    1. Totally different set of documents. That project is for records that FamilySearch digitized and includes records from the late 1880s through the early 1900s. This is from half a century earlier.

  7. You are a great fellow! It is very useful to learn about your ancestors! This is probably the parents of my great-grandfather, whom I reached in my search! Everything came together! 🙏
