Tracking Mira's Children: Meyer

This is the second in a series tracking the children of Mira Halperin Lefand Marienhoff. You can see everything in this series to this point here.
Meyer Lefand Birth Record, Nezhin, Ukraine, 1879

Meyer Lefand was born in Nezhin, Ukraine on September 9, 1879, to Yehoshua (son of Ber) and Mira (daughter of Yitzchak) Lefand.  He was at least their fourth child.

In 1904, Meyer and Sofia Lefant immigrated to America.  They were going to join Sofia's brother Chaim Rifkin in Brooklyn, on Pike Street--the same address that Meyer's brother Nechemia was to go to only a month later.  Meyer was a tailor.  His last residence looks like Groluk or Proluk.  This was possibly Prikuli, a city just south of Nezhin.

By 1910, Meyer and Sofia Lefand were still living in Brooklyn, and they had two children, Samuel and Sarah.  Meyer was an operator in a cloak factory.

Meyer registered for the draft for World War I.

Meyer was a tailor.  Interestingly, his signature looks like Meep.  The "P" in Russian makes an "R" sound!

Meyer did not make it to fight in the war.  He had registered in September 1918.  He died in Brooklyn on August 19, 1919, aged only 40.  He left behind his wife Sofia (who later remarried to Solomon Fox) and children Samuel, Sarah, Jacob, Mary, and Bessie.

All these years later, my part of the family & Meyer's have gotten reconnected--and I've actually met his great granddaughter Sara and great-great grandson Aaron!
