My 5th Great Grandmother, Chava Lefand

This past summer, I found the death record for my 5th great grandfather, which gave me his father's name.  I've also found the name of his wife, my 5th great grandmother.

My great-great-great-great-great grandmother was Chava Lefand.  I do not know her maiden name, but her father's name was Volko/Volf.
Chava Lefand, 1882 Poll Tax, Nezhin

The first mention I have of Chava Lefand is in an 1882 Poll Tax Census of the Nezhin District.  Chava (daughter of Volko) Lefand was 85 years old and living in the village of Drozdovka, where she had lived since 1845.  She lived with her son, Itzko son of Meir (Itzko was my 5th great uncle) who was 65.  They owned the land, and there was a house on the land; the land was been purchased from the nobleman Selezky.

Chava only lived a few years after that census was taken.
Chava Lefand Death, Nezhin, 1884
Chava Lefand died on April 15, 1887 at the age of 87.  Her death record says she was the daughter of Volf and the wife of Meir Lefand.

Had she not lived into her 80s, I'd have found no trace of her name.  Metrical records for the town only started in the 1850s, so the births of her children weren't recorded.  And so far, 1882 is the earliest census-type record I've found for the Nezhin area (although I may now have a lead on an earlier one).

  1. I don't think I have death years for anyone beyond third-great-grandparents (I have about a dozen of those) but the latest is 1887.

    1. Yes, I have gone through all of these records individually. I have had this record for many years. No need to look for Lefands, etc. in these records for me, as I have them all.
